What is carnival?
The fifth season, Carnival, Fasching or Fastnacht ... all the local terms refer to one and the same thing: the custom of celebrating the beginning of the forty-day Lent exuberantly. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends with Easter.
Where does the custom of celebrating Carnival come from?
Carnival was originally a pagan folk festival that heralded the transition from winter to spring. Spring was welcomed and the end of winter was celebrated. Carnival costumes and carnival masks had the purpose of driving away evil winter spirits and awakening good spirits.
Another theory is that the carnival festival originated in Greece. At the end of February, the Greeks celebrated a festival in honor of the god Dionysus. New wine was poured in honor of the deity of wine, joy, grapes and fertility.
In the Middle Ages, the tradition was adopted by Christianity. The idea was to really savor the time before Lent. The word carnival comes from "carnevale", which means "meat, goodbye!".
Where is Carnival celebrated?
Carnival is celebrated in many different ways. Music, masks and dressing up as well as parades play a major role. Particularly well-known customs are the carnival in Rio or the carnival in Venice. Here in Germany, the Rhineland and Rhinehessen are among the "strongholds" of carnival.
